Contemporary work to a fine old home.
This project is a restoration and extension of an 1850’s listed Victorian house. The challenge was to design a contemporary extension which complimented the elegance of the existing house. The extension is composed of three distinct volumes, varying in height, which wrap around the return and relate to its proportions. A single story entrance volume is concealed by an original brick wall, capturing a courtyard between the two.
Its glazed walls allow light to filter into the ground floor sof the house. A three storey brick volume lies behind, containing key services which the original house lacked. This presents a blank brick façade to the road. A two storey glass volume extends out from the rear of the return providing a tall dining space which links to the garden and to the kitchen above.
